Project of the Week!: Classroom Experiments
Mould Experiment: Grow your own fungi! WARNING: Hazardous smell may occur.

GOAL: To find out which environment fungi grows best in

Step One: Get into a group of three or four and select each person to bring one of these items:
- Bread
- Orange
- Apple
- Cheese
- Paper clip

Step Two: Choose an environment for each sample. Try dividing them into multiple but equal pieces and place them in different environments to see which one grows better. Examples of environments are:
- By the sun (a window sill will work)
- In the dark (a cupboard)
- Moist (put some water in the ziploc bag)
- Dry (don't let any moisture into the bag)
- Sealed (close the ziploc bag)
- Exposed to air (let the air in and leave bag open)

Step Three: Put the samples in the different environments. For 10 consecutive days (or  shorter or longer) keep them in those environments and once a day, record their changes and take pictures of them.

Step Four: At the end of the time span to do the experiment, compare all the pictures from the different days. Which environment did fungi grow best in? Write down your conclusion. Make sure to throw out all your samples, unless you want to end up with a stinky room and mould in your cupboard!

Have fun doing this experiment!
